It is well-established that breastfeeding is important to the health of babies and their mothers. When a woman returns from maternity leave she faces a choice between weaning her baby from breast milk to formula or finding a way to continue breastfeeding.
To keep her babies on breast milk she has to pump (or “express”) her milk into bottles while at work and take it home at the end of each day. The bottled breast milk is used by the baby’s caregiver while the mother is at work and by the mother’s partner while the mother misses a feeding or two at night in order to sleep.
Managing to express breast milk during the workday can be difficult and harrowing unless the work environment provides for it.
